I jumped into the swimwear industry after a decade of dreaming about doing it, but I also saw an opportunity to fill a need. There just simply wasn’t enough black women booking swimsuit campaigns or being represented on swimsuit advertisements. Unless the black woman was a celebrity, I rarely saw black models on swimsuit websites and on social media accounts. It was as if we didn’t exist or weren’t the main influences when these huge brands market their products to us via sms text message campaigns or emails. You know those feisty catch phrases your favorite brands use to remind us to shop. Our slang, our twang, and even our vibe is the blueprint, and yet we’re rarely apart of the finished product.

Summer Fashion Essentials

I saw an opportunity to not only do what I love, but to also do it my OWN way. I wanted to create space for more women who looked like me. Diversity and representation is important, but it’s not enough to keep having these conversations if we aren’t going to do anything about it. As a model who advocates for inclusivity, I know the easier route to marketing would be to follow the cookie cutter aesthetic we see constantly in huge ad campaigns or in commercials. But how can you complain about something and not fix it? How can you moan and groan about feeling marginalized as a creative, having to pull yourself up by your boot straps and always do MORE to get half a step ahead, and then drop the ball when you arrive by doing what has always been done. I’m not saying I’m the first black woman to create a swimwear line, but I definitely am one of few to highlight black women in a beautiful light. Black women are my muse. Everyone is my customer but I wanted this story to be told through MY lens. I make it my mission to hire black models to showcase my gorgeous swim and resort wear because representation matters.
